Postage rise will hit elderly
THERE is talk about removing the cap on second class postage, with the result being that the cost of sending a letter may rise from 36p to 55p (Yorkshire Post, January 20).
This disadvantages all those without internet access, particularly the poor and elderly. And given the decline in the use of the Royal Mail thanks to online competition, it’s hardly going to win them any more business, is it?
Ills of almost broken society

Hide AdWHAT a splendid opinion column by Father Neil McNicholas (Yorkshire Post, January 12) on the ills of our almost broken society, and particularly the obsession with alcohol and binge drinking.
Our present bunch of politicians and the Church of England hierarchy would do well to read his columns regularly and invite him to their “teach-ins”, for I am sure that they could learn so much from him for the benefit of both their constituents and parishioners.
Deter with real life sentences

THIS is a wake-up call to David Cameron, Theresa May and Kenneth Clarke with regard to the sentencing of those convicted of murder, manslaughter, rape, child abuse and the like.
It has to be accepted that capital punishment is never going to come back in this country, but when is a life sentence going to mean life and not just nine years?
Surely the thought of living the rest of their lives in prison should deter many potential murderers?
