PROMOTING all that Pocklington has to offer is the aim of a new leaflet for visitors to the town.
The leaflet, Visit Pocklington, has been compiled by the Promotion of Pocklington group.

The group is made up of representatives from other groups in the town, such as the town council, chamber of trade and the civic society.

Despite the production of the popular town guide, some felt that promotion of the town was failing to bring people in and insufficient at encouraging local people to use the local shops.

They said an easy-to-read folded pamphlet, listing shops and businesses, could help the situation, especially in persuading some of the 50,000 annual visitors to Burnby Hall Gardens to head for the town centre.

The leaflet has a detailed map on one side, highlighting services, points of interest and attractions in and around the town. The other side lists more information, local attractions and accommodation. The pamphlet will have an initial print run of 20,000.

It will be available in outlets around the town and will also be sent out with tickets and booklets from the arts centre and bus visits to Burnby Hall Gardens.

Councillor Graham Perry, from the group, said: “It’s aimed at people coming into the town. Traditionally the booklet was two-thirds full of advertisements, not really suitable to attract tourists in. There’s a lot of things you can do in and around Pocklington. I was amazed at the amount of things people could do around the town that I hadn’t done.

“I think you could come from West Yorkshire and spend a week to ten days in Pocklington.”

The cost of the leaflet, approximately £1,000, has been covered by funding from the groups involved including the town council, chamber of trade and Burnby Hall Gardens plus donations from town businesses. Future projects for the promote Pocklington committee include pushing a ‘shop local’ campaign.
