POCKLINGTON'S town clerk will be having tea and cake with the Queen next month, in recognition of his work during last year's floods.
Richard Wood, pictured, has been invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

He was nominated for the privileged invitation by Councillor Rowan Blake James.

Coun Blake James also holds the post of Deputy Lieutenant to the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, The Hon Susan Cunliffe-Lister.

It was in this role she was asked to suggest someone to be considered for a Garden Party invitation.

Lord Lieutenant is the title given to the Queen’s representatives across the country, their responsibilities include presenting awards on behalf of the Queen and advising on Honours nominations.

Coun Blake James said: “This year the Lord Lieutenant had asked specifically that we should choose someone who had played a key role in coping with last year’s flood disaster.

“Many people of course contributed valiantly and in many ways, so it was a challenge to deicide who to nominate.

“But I did think that the town clerk’s contribution to Pocklington in organising our town’s flood report and the special flood committee was a particularly important one and so I wrote to the Lord Lieutenant suggesting Richard Wood.”

Mr Wood’s work in the aftermath of the floods included helping co-ordinate questionnaires to businesses affected by the floodwater and liaising with flood advisor Peter Kite, who compiled the town’s flood report. The Queen hosts at least three garden parties in the grounds of Buckingham Palace every year.

Guests can stroll around the gardens and are served tea, sandwiches and cake.

Two military bands play during the event and The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the royal family, circulate among guests..
